Background

Clint T. Allen, M.D., is a head and neck cancer surgeon with the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in the Washington, D.C. area, as well as an assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Allen is the otolaryngology representative for the Suburban Hospital Expansion Committee and also serves as the Johns Hopkins Otolaryngology Consult for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Warren Magnuson Clinical Center, as well as a Surgical Administrative Representative for the Otolaryngology Clinical Service. He is board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Allen has expertise in voice, swallowing and airway disorders, including endoscopic laser resection of upper aerodigestive tract cancers, transoral laser management of patients with early stage laryngeal cancer, surgical management of dysphagia and treatment of spasmodic dysphonia. Dr. Allen offers in-office laryngeal procedures, including injection laryngoplasty and laryngeal botox, KTP laser ablation of benign lesions, and vocal fold augmentation.

Dr. Allen was awarded a clinical research training fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, where he studied alterations in oncogenic signaling pathways within head and neck cancer cells, before earning his medical degree from Texas A&M University College of Medicine. He completed a surgical internship and residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he served as chief resident and helped characterize newly developed syngeneic models of oral cavity cancer. Dr. Allen also completed a fellowship in laryngology at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Allen is a fellow of the American College of Surgery, as well as a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO/AHNS), the American Association for Cancer Research, The Triological Society and the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer.

Dr. Allen is the principal investigator of the Translational Tumor Immunology Program within the Head and Neck Surgery Branch of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), where he uses various therapeutic approaches to reverse local immunosuppression within the tumor microenvironment to enhance responses to immune-activating anti-cancer treatments. He has contributed to numerous publications, presentations and posters, and serves as a reviewer for multiple journals, such as The Laryngoscope, Oral Oncology, Oncotarget, Clinical Cancer Research, and Cancer Immunology Research. Dr. Allen has received funding for his research from the National Institutes of Health, and has earned the NIH/NIDCD Surgeon-Scientist Development Program Award, the AAO/AHNS Duane Sewell Young Investigator Award and The Triological Society Career Development Award.

Dr. Allen is a member of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center's core faculty. He has provided clinical, classroom and CME instruction, as well as mentorship for medical students. He teaches laryngeal anatomy and interpretation of laryngeal videostroboscopy to residents, as well as tumor immunology in the laboratory. Dr. Allen serves as the seminar coordinator for the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, collaborating with speakers from across the world to give scientific and clinical lectures on head and neck surgery.

Research Summary

Dr. Allen aims to understand the complex immune microenvironment within head and neck cancers and to design combination treatment strategies to induce immune-medicated rejection of these and other malignancies. He has clarified the role of several immunosuppressive immune cell subsets within head and neck cancer, including myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Dr. Allen has also characterized and utilized several novel syngeneic models of carcinogen-induced head and neck cancer, which are now being utilized by many laboratories across the world and several clinical trials are being executed based upon his pre-clinical results.
