Michael L. Palmer, M.D., is a surgical oncologist at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Palmer is board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Palmer has a range of expertise, including benign and malignant diseases of the breast, sentinel lymph node surgery for breast cancer and melanoma, as well as gastrointestinal cancer, including colon cancer, colon polyps, colon surgery, diverticulitis, gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, and laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Palmer earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in general surgery. He completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, where he was selected for the American Cancer Society Clinical Research Fellowship Award. He also earned the Reader's Digest International Fellowship and spent two months of clinical experience in Bihar, India. Dr. Palmer went on to work as an attending surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was also previously the associate chief of the breast department and a member of the gastrointestinal and endoscopy services at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Dr. Palmer has also worked at Georgetown University Medical Center, where he served as a clinical assistant professor of surgery, and Virginia Hospital Center.
Dr. Palmer serves on the Cancer Committee, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, the Institutional Review Board Committee, the Invasive Procedure Review and the Medical Staff Credentialing Committee at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology; as well as a member of the American Association for the History of Medicine, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Palmer has been named a Top Surgical Specialist in the Washington, D.C. area by Washingtonian Magazine and a Top Doctor by Consumers’ Checkbook magazine. He has also earned the John Carroll Society Pro Bono Health Care Award.
Dr. Palmer has contributed to numerous clinical presentations and publications.
