Dr. Podlasek has served Johns Hopkins Pathology as laboratory CLIA medical director at Howard County General Hospital since 2003 and at Suburban Hospital since 2014.  He is part of the team that remodeled the space, organization, automated platforms and procedures of each new hospital laboratory in support of the expansion of Johns Hopkins Medicine.  During this transition the Hospital System used competitive bidding, economy of scale with conforming platforms, and consolidation of work stations and laboratories to achieve higher quality, efficiency, and reliability of service – a process that is continuing today with optimization of its new IT systems.

Before joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Podlasek started his career working for Georgetown University School of Medicine, as Associate Laboratory Director for Clinical Chemistry and Transfusion Medicine.  He directed the Trauma Center Transfusion Medicine service at Prince George’s Hospital Center for over ten years, and was medical director of Metropolitan Washington Blood Banks, Inc. regional blood services subsequently acquired by INOVA from Virginia Blood Services.   He is a general surgical pathologist with over 30 years of experience.

Dr. Podlasek has been very interested in patient safety and quality assurance, recently serving on the JHHS Blood Management Clinical Community of JH Armstrong Institute to improve blood utilization and compliance with transfusion triggers and targets. more
