Background

Sally S. Ong, MD was born and raised in Malaysia and came to the United States to attend college on a full merit scholarship. She graduated with distinction from Duke University before returning to Southeast Asia to attend the Duke-National University of Singapore Medical School. After graduating from medical school, she completed an internship year at the Tufts University affiliated Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham, Massachusetts, and a three-year ophthalmology residency at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, North Carolina. During residency, she received the ASCRS Foundation Resident Excellence Award, given annually to ten ophthalmology residents nationwide for exemplary performance in research, patient care, leadership, and education. She then completed a postdoctoral research year as a Loris and David Rich Scholar of the International Retinal Research Foundation, studying advanced retinal imaging under the mentorship of Dr. Cynthia Toth. She came to the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2018 to begin a two-year clinical fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery. During fellowship, she received the 18th Raymond R. Margherio Award at the Retina Society 52nd Annual Meeting, and the Evangelos S. Gragoudas Award at the Macula Society 43rd Annual Meeting.
