Kunihiro Matsushita, M.D., Ph.D.

  • Joint Appointment in Medicine

Background

Dr. Kunihiro Matsushita is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His research focuses on cardiovascular epidemiology. He is an associate professor of epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Through his clinical experience as an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Matsushita was first interested in diabetes as a key risk factor for coronary heart disease and its antecedent, obesity. His early research area of interest was the epidemiological relationship among insulin resistance, adipokines, inflammatory markers and cardiovascular risk.

Since joining the Bloomberg School of Public Health, he has added a kidney angle to his research. He has been investigating the associations among kidney, diabetes and cardiovascular disease associations using the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study and the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Prognosis Consortium.

Dr. Matsushita serves as director of the consortium’s Data Coordinating Center. The consortium is tasked with compiling and meta-analyzing the best available data to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the impact of CKD on prognosis, with implications for improving clinical guidelines of CKD.

Overall, he is interested in establishing a bridge between medicine and epidemiological research; improving the application of epidemiologic methods to clinical questions in order to form an evidence base that can advance treatment; and prevention of cardiovascular and kidney diseases.

Dr. Matsushita earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in medical science from the Nagoya University School of Medicine in Japan. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology at Nagoya Daini Red Cross Hospital in Japan. He also completed a research fellowship in cardiology and public health at Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine and a postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2010.

Dr. Matsushita is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Heart Association, the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Nephrology, and he serves on the editorial board of Kidney International. His work has been recognized with the 2014 Sandra Daugherty Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Disease or Hypertension Epidemiology from the American Heart Association. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association.
