Background

Dr. Ping Xia joined the Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in January 2017 as associate professor (PAR) and director of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Laboratories in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Xia has extensive experience in the field of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), having worked as associate professor and director of the IVF laboratories of McMaster University, University of Arizona and University of California at Davis. She is certified as a High-complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD) and Clinical Consultant by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB). Her areas of expertise include all aspects of oocyte maturation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, oocyte/embryo cryopreservation, ovarian cryopreservation and preimplantation genetic screening/diagnosis.

In addition to the clinical laboratory responsibility, Dr. Xia is a leader in research on improving pregnancy rates in the ART field. In 1997, she developed and authored an oocyte morphological criteria that, when followed, improves pregnancy rates by evaluating oocyte morphology for the purpose of selecting best embryos for patients. This paper has been widely cited by experts. Dr. Xia has also published many peer-reviewed papers. She was the first to propose polyspermy could be a physiological condition in pigs. Her paper resulted in a guest editorship of Microscopy Research Techniques for which she edited a special issue of “Biology of Polyspermy,” followed by another invitation of a review paper, “Polyspermy and its Clinical Indications” published in the Curr Obstet Gynecol Rep in 2013. The most recent review paper entitled “Cumulus cells and their immune function” has been accepted by Reproductive and Developmental Medicine.

Dr. Xia earned her M.D. from Harbin Medical University in China and her Ph.D. in embryology from Northeast Agricultural University in China. She completed two post-doctoral trainings in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers University in New Jersey and University of Western Ontario in Canada.
