Dr. Eellan Sivanesan is faculty of the Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, Division of Pain Medicine. He treats patients with chronic back, joint, abdominal, pelvic, headache, neuropathic, cancer, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), post-amputation, and other pain conditions at the Blaustein Pain Treatment Center. He performs fluoroscopically and ultrasound guided interventions such as injections of peripheral nerves, muscles, joints, thermal radiofrequency ablation, pulsed radiofrequency ablation, and various chemodenervation procedures.

Dr. Sivanesan also utilizes advanced neuromodulation techniques to treat a range of chronic pain conditions. He is specialized in all modalities of spinal cord stimulation including the latest technologies such as High Frequency stimulation, Burst stimulation, and High Density stimulation. He is also an expert in Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, and intrathecal drug delivery. He is a committee member of the International Neuromodulation Society (INS), the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA), and the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS).

Dr. Sivanesan’s neuroscience research at Johns Hopkins aligns with his clinical practice as he investigates the effects of spinal cord stimulation on the brain. The goal of this multidisciplinary work is to develop optimal stimulation therapies for treating neuropathic pain conditions and discover novel applications for patients suffering from painful conditions. His work has been published in Neuromodulation, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, Journal of Pain & Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy, and on the cover of Anesthesia and Analgesia.

Education: After graduating from The University of Oklahoma with a dual degree in Biochemistry and Zoology, Dr. Sivanesan stayed to attend medical school at The University of Oklahoma. He completed his clinical training at The University of Miami with a residency in Anesthesiology and a clinical fellowship in Pain Medicine where he was the recipient of multiple academic accolades.

Patient Ratings & Comments

The Patient Rating score is an average of all responses to physician related questions on the national CG-CAHPS Medical Practice patient experience survey through Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score. Comments are also gathered from our CG-CAHPS Medical Practice Survey through Press Ganey and displayed in their entirety. Patients are de-identified for confidentiality and patient privacy.
