Haniee Chung, M.D., is an assistant professor of surgery and vice director of global surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as well as a colorectal surgeon at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Chung also practices at Suburban Hospital. Her board certifications in general surgery, and colon and rectal surgery are currently pending.
Dr. Chung is one of a few surgeons in the D.C. metropolitan area to perform the transanal-Total Mesorectal Excision (ta-TME) for surgically treating rectal cancer. Dr. Chung is partnering with Sibley's Dr. Martin Paul for this dual-approach, minimally-invasive technique that uses an abdominal approach via laparoscopy and a pelvic/transanal approach through a transanal minimally-invasive surgery platform. Ta-TME allows for ease of access to otherwise difficult to define surgical planes in the pelvis, and increased efficiency and accuracy of identifying the cancer and performing an oncologically sound operation.
Dr. Chung's expertise is in colorectal surgery, and her clinical focus includes colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and benign anorectal disorders, such as hemorrhoids, perirectal fistulas, rectal prolapse, fecal incontinence and performing endoscopies for screening colonoscopies and polypectomies. She also has expertise in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures, as well as stoma sparing procedures such as ileal pouch anal anastomosis and transanal techniques.
Dr. Chung earned her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed a residency and research fellowship in general surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, where she was named the Walter F. Ballinger II Administrative Chief Resident. She also completed a colorectal surgery fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Chung is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, where she serves on the Global Affairs Committee.
Dr. Chung was awarded the American College of Surgeons Leadership and Advocacy Committee Scholarship in 2016. She has also received the Department of Surgery Medical Student Teaching Award and was a finalist for the Jameson L. Chassin, M.D., Award for Professionalism in General Surgery.
Dr. Chung's research interest focuses on global health and improving access to surgical care in underserved areas. She has completed service trips with the Surgical Outreach for the Americas to Dominican Republic and El Salvador. Dr. Chung has contributed to numerous publications, book chapters and presentations.
