Background

Richard A. Schaefer, M.D., is an orthopaedic specialist treating patients with a variety of bone, tendon and ligament conditions affecting back and neck, arm and shoulder, hip and leg and other parts of the body. He uses nonsurgical treatments to help patients recover from joint pain, joint injuries and related conditions. 

In addition to his medical degree and orthopaedic residency training, Dr. Schaefer is fellowship-trained in orthopaedic oncology through the Mayo Clinic and holds a master’s degree in public health from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Schaefer served for over 30 years in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of colonel. He had a number of stateside and overseas assignments at military medical facilities, including two tours in Afghanistan. He received several military decorations and awards for his service, including the Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge.

Dr. Schaefer is a graduate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Leadership Fellows Program and has served on several AAOS committees, including the Public Relations Oversight Group, Women’s Health Advisory Board and the Diversity Advisory Board.
