Dr. Mary T. Donofrio is a pediatric cardiologist affiliated with Sibley Memorial Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center, where she is director of the Fetal Heart Program and Critical Care Delivery Program, director of the Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship and co-director of the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Program. Dr. Donofrio is certified in pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics. She practices out of Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Donofrio has expanded the Fetal Heart Program at Children’s National Medical Center to include the only Early Fetal Cardiac Imaging Program in the Washington, D.C. region. This allows for detection of heart abnormalities in high-risk pregnancies in the first trimester, as early as 12 weeks gestation.
Dr. Donofrio has an expertise in fetal diagnosis and in-utero management of congenital heart disease, first trimester fetal cardiac imaging, fetal echocardiography, pediatric transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, delivery room management and transitional care for complex disease, complex congenital heart disease management and neurodevelopmental outcome assessment of children with congenital heart disease.
Dr. Donofrio earned her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed a residency in pediatrics at New York Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and advanced training in fetal echocardiography at Yale University. Dr. Donofrio previously served as the director of the echocardiography laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.
Dr. Donofrio is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Society of Echocardiography, as well as a member of the American Pediatric Society and the Society for Pediatric Research.
Dr. Donofrio has been named a Super Doctor by the Washington Post Magazine.
Dr. Donofrio has research interests in autoregulation of cerebral blood flow in fetuses with congenital heart disease and the effects circulation has on neurodevelopmental outcome in congenital heart disease patients. She has developed care protocols for delivery room management of neonates diagnosed with complex congenital heart disease in-utero. Dr. Donofrio is on several journal editorial boards, research committees and has published numerous papers and abstracts, including the first published Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Fetal Cardiac Disease.
