Background

Dr. Vivek Kumbhari is the Director of Bariatric Endoscopy at Johns Hopkins Medicine, as well as an Associate Professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has been practicing medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital since 2015, and recently joined the medical staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. His expertise includes performing endoscopic therapies to treat oncologic conditions involving the gastrointestinal tract, managing complications of surgery, and minimally invasive, non-surgical therapies to facilitate weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes.

 

Dr. Kumbhari received his PhD from the University of Sydney in 2019 with his thesis titled, “Endoluminal Weight Loss and Metabolic Therapies: Current and Future Techniques”. He is currently developing several new endoscopic weight loss methods. His research interests include endoscopic innovations, primary weight loss and metabolic therapies, managing adverse events following surgery, interventional endoscopic ultrasonography, and submucosal endoscopy. He has contributed to over 200 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and invited reviews, and speaks both nationally and internationally.

Expertise in therapeutic and oncologic endoscopic therapies include:

  • EUS-FNA
  • EUS-guided billiary drainage; pancreatic fluid collection drainage; gallbladder drainage, coil and glue injection of gastric varices
  • ERCP
  • EGD/Colon with full thickness resection
  • Large polyp EMR and ESD
  • Double balloon enteroscopy 
  • Barrett's ablation (cryoablation and RFA)
  • Barrett's EMR and ESD
  • EGD with dilation and stenting

Expertise in bariatric endoscopy include:

  • Management of post-surgical complications including post-surgery leak, stricture and fistula 
  • Minimally invasive, incisionless weight loss therapies, including the intra gastric balloon, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and aspiration therapy
  • Endoscopic suturing to reduce the size of the gastric pouch and outlet for patients who have regained weight after gastric bypass
