Background
Dr. Anthony S. Unger is the medical director for the Gildenhorn Institute for Bone and Joint Health and an orthopaedic surgeon at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He practices out of Washington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, located in Sibley Memorial Hospital’s Medical Building and Chevy Chase, MD. Dr. Unger is also currently a co-director of the Johns Hopkins Community Joint Program, a co-director of the orthopaedic section at The Georgetown University Hemophiliac Center and a director of the Washington Center for Hip and Knee Surgery.
Dr. Unger has a recognized expertise in total joint replacement and minimally invasive surgery. He regularly lectures and teaches about these techniques to both national and international physicians. Dr. Unger is also an expertise in anterior hip replacement surgery, which draws both national and international patients.
Dr. Unger earned his undergraduate degree from State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook and his medical degree from SUNY at Buffalo. He completed an internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an orthopaedic research fellowship. Dr. Unger also completed a comprehensive arthritis fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Unger was previously an associate clinical professor of orthopaedics at Georgetown University Medical Center and a clinical professor of orthopaedics at George Washington University Medical Center.
Dr. Unger was awarded the Baldridge Physician Award in 2008 by the George Washington University Medical Center. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the D.C. Medical Society, the Washington Orthopaedic Society, the D.C. Rheumatism Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Association for Arthritic Hip & Knee Surgery, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association and the Osler Society. Dr. Unger is also a medical advisor of the Jewish Social Services, the Peace Corps USA of Washington, D.C. and the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of the National Capital Area.
Dr. Unger has developed new implants and technologies for hip and knee replacement surgeries, earning him multiple U.S. patents. Dr. Unger has contributed to numerous publications, book chapters and presentations.
