Background

Kimberley E. Steele, MD, PhD, FACS, FASMBS completed her surgical residency at Hershey Penn State University from 2000 to 2005 and her minimally invasive and bariatric surgical fellowship at Johns Hopkins 2005-2006. She has been on faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for 13 years. She received a KL2 NIH award and Clinician Scientist Award in 2011, which allowed her to study at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where she obtained a PhD in the Graduate Training in Clinical Investigation.

As a specialist in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, Dr. Steele employs state of the art techniques to help patients address their obesity-related health problems. At the foundation of her clinical practice is the notion that each patient should be treated as an individual. She believes in getting to know her patients and spending time with them: educating them and helping them understand the disease process and how they can take an active role in improving their health.

Dr. Steele is recognized nationally and internationally for her research in obesity and bariatric surgery. More specifically her research interests include the neural correlates of feeding behavior, the influence of the gut on the brain, and improvement of surgical outcomes through the optimization of perioperative care.

Dr. Steele is an Associate Professor of Surgery and contributes in all facets of academia including clinical expertise, research and education. She is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program, Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Research and Innovation, and Director of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Center for Surgical Simulation and Education.
