Catherine A. Sewell, M.D., M.P.H., is an assistant professor in the Johns Hopkins Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She is also a medical officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Office of New Drugs, Office of Drug Evaluation III, Division of Bone, Urologic and Reproductive Products.

Prior to her academic role at Johns Hopkins, she served as medical director at Jefferson Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates at Thomas Jefferson University from 2002 to 2007, and was a consultant for Jhpiego from 2000 to 2001.

Dr. Sewell’s areas of clinical expertise include fibroids, HPV infections, cervical disorders and ovarian cysts. Her research interests cover new treatment options for fibroids, practice patterns in gynecology and pregnancy testing protocols for clinical trials. She has been invited to several lectures and has had numerous publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. 

Dr. Sewell received her undergraduate degree in English literature with honors from Swarthmore College. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed her residency in gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She then earned her master’s degree in public health from what is now the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Sewell has been recognized with a variety of awards. Most recently, she was recognized with the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Teaching Award, the CDER Team Excellence Award and the CDER Center Director’s Special Citation. more
