  • Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine

Research Interests

Systems engineering in health care; Medical decision making; Human factors engineering in health care; Emergency department crowding and patient outcomes more

Dr. Levin is an associate professor and assistant director for research in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and he works as a member of the Johns Hopkins Health System’s Operations Integration consultancy to forward operational, quality and financial improvement initiatives within the Johns Hopkins Health System.

Upon finishing his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Levin joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2008. Dr. Levin’s research focuses on the development and application of systems engineering tools to improve the safety and efficiency of health care delivery. Research is directed toward determining how scarce health care resources may be managed and deployed to best care for patient populations. This includes an emphasis on developing informatics tools and operations research techniques aimed at improving quality of care, access to care and medical decision-making. Many of these tools have been translated to decision support applications within the Johns Hopkins Health System They are available online via the National Academies of Medicine and Engineering and the National Center for the Study of Preparedness and Catastrophic Event Response more
