Background

O. Joseph Bienvenu, M.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Co-Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Broadway Campus. He completed his psychiatric training at Johns Hopkins in 1996, having served as chief resident in his final year.

Dr. Bienvenu joined the faculty full-time in 1999 after completing a research fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology and a doctorate through the Johns Hopkins Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation. His area of particular research interest involves the interface of personality traits and anxiety and depressive disorders, and he currently has a federal grant to expand his expertise in the genetic underpinnings of these characteristics. Dr. Bienvenu directs the academic program for resident education in the anxiety disorders and teaches medical students about these common conditions.
