Background

Dr. Lauren Melissa Jansson is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include drug abuse research, drug-exposed infants and children, and pediatrics.

Since 1991, Dr. Jansson has been the director of pediatrics at the Center for Addiction and Pregnancy, a comprehensive care treatment facility for pregnant and parenting drug-dependent women and their children.

Dr. Jansson earned her M.D. from the State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center. She completed her residency at the Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center and performed a fellowship in developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Her research interests include fetal neurobehavioral development in drug-exposed pregnancies, lactation in opioid-dependent women on medication assisted treatment, and neonatal abstinence syndrome resulting from in utero opiate and other substance exposures.

Dr. Jansson is a member of several professional organizations, including the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the Academic Pediatric Association, and the Society for Pediatric Research.

Research Summary

Dr. Jansson's research involves the fetuses, infants and children of drug-dependent mothers. She is the principal investigator of a NIDA-funded project that involves the evaluation of fetal and infant neurobehaviors after prenatal exposure to buprenorphine and other illicit and licit substances. The research seeks to determine the pathogenesis of neonatal abstinence syndrome—the constellation of signs and symptoms of withdrawal after birth in prenatally opioid exposed infants—in this group.

Other projects include the evaluation of concentrations of buprenorphine and its metabolite in infant plasma, and breast milk and plasma of lactating women; fetal neurobehaviors in methadone- versus buprenorphine-exposed pregnancies; the effects of fetal gender on infant outcomes; and the effects of polysubstance use on fetal and infant neurobehaviors.

Dr. Jansson's research has the overarching goal of optimizing evaluation and treatment for the vulnerable population of drug-dependent pregnant and postpartum women and their infants and children.
