Background

Dr. Joanne Emily Shay is an assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include anesthesiology.

Dr. Shay serves as the director of Pediatric Remote Anesthesiology Division at the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

A native New Yorker, Dr. Shay attended college and medical school at the University of Chicago. She completed her residency at the University of Chicago and returned there after a pediatric anesthesia fellowship at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She earned her M.B.A. from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

Dr. Shay was on the faculty at D.C. Children’s for a number of years before entering private practice. She missed the academic environment and joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins.

Her research interests include pediatric pain management in the developmentally disabled population, medical acupuncture for pain, regional anesthesia and peripheral nerve blocks in children and remote anesthesia services.
