Fabian M. Johnston, M.D., M.H.S., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and Division Chief of the newly created Division of Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology. In addition, he serves as Director of the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program and Program Director of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Program.

Dr. Johnston received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and medical degree from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He completed residencies at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University and earned a Masters in Health Science at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Johnston is funded through a K08 career award from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality and he is a coinvestigator on multiple PCORI awards.

His clinical and research interests include utilization of highly innovative and novel strategies for the implementation of patient-centered models of care to improve utilization of palliative care amongst patients with advanced gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Johnston holds leadership and committee positions at various organizations, including education committee member for the Association of Academic Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgeons’ representative for the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, and the American College of Surgeons Committee for Surgical Palliative Care. He is also a member of Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. more
