Dr. Graham has a long history of research in the area of perinatal brain injury that involves both basic science and clinical work. Past research includes neuronal cell membrane Na+,K+-ATPase damage following hypoxia-ischemia in animal models, risk factors for seizures and periventricular white matter in the neonate, and the relationship between severe intrapartum metabolic acidosis, electronic fetal heart rate monitoring and neurologic morbidity and mortality. Current research involves using biomarkers measured in cord blood at birth and in neonatal serum during the 1st week of life to identify neonates at risk for neurodevelopmental abnormalities and to follow the efficacy of new therapies such as whole body cooling for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
