Ehud Jeruham Schmidt, Ph.D.

Headshot of Ehud Jeruham Schmidt
  • Associate Professor of Medicine

Background

Ehud Schmidt, Ph.D., joins Johns Hopkins Medicine as an associate professor of medicine within the Division of Cardiology. His primary focus is research, including the areas of MRI-compatible devices, MR Imaging and MR Tracking pulse sequences, as well as MRI-guided cardiac electrophysiology. Ehud has engaged in MRI-guided interventions from 1998, advancing procedures from large-animal trials to humans in brain-tumor excision, abdominal-tumor radio-frequency and cryogenic ablation, pelvic tumor high-dose-rate (HDR) interstitial radiation therapy, and most recently anterior cervical-spine discectomy and fusion (ACDF). He now works with Dr. Henry Halperin (Cardiology) on bringing MRI-guided cardiac arrhythmia ablation to humans and Akila Viswanathan (Radiation Oncology) on MRI-guided HDR brachytherapy radioactive source placement.

Dr. Schmidt received his doctorate of philosophy degree in applied physics and geophysics from Stanford University. He completed a research fellowship in solid state physics at Technion (IIT) in Haifa, Israel. He then worked in the medical-imaging industry (Elscint, General Electric) as an MRI physicist and later as manager of interventional MRI in the GE Applied Science Lab. With more than 30 years of experience in the field, Dr. Schmidt most recently served as an associate professor within the Harvard Medical School Department of Radiology, and as a clinical physicist and director of engineering physics at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Radiology.
