Background

Dr. Kim is a pulmonary and critical care medicine trained physician who is an intensivist in the Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CVSICU). He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of critical illness with a focus in post-operative management of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery including heart and lung transplantation, cardiac bypass graft, and valvular replacement procedures.  Dr. Kim also has expertise in all forms of mechanical support including intra-aortic balloon pumps, ventricular assist devices (VADs), and ECMO.  He serves as the Medical Director of the Hopkins Adult ECMO Program.

Research Summary

Dr. Kim is the co-founder of the team: Hopkins Education, Research, and Advancement in Life-support Devices (HERALD).  This team leads multiple research projects that are both clinical and translational in Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) life support interventions.  Dr. Kim will also be the co-PI on a large animal model of ECMO cannulation to determine the optimal ventilator management in severe respiratory failure.
