2015 Excellence in Service and Professionalism Award – Barry Solomon, M.D., M.P.H., JHH
Background
Dr. Barry Solomon is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is Chief of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and Assistant Dean for Medical Student Affairs.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he completed a residency at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a fellowship in general academic pediatrics at Johns Hopkins. He holds an M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr. Solomon’s clinical work, research, teaching and advocacy efforts relate to addressing the social and behavioral health needs of urban youth and caregivers through educational curricula and clinic-based interventions. For many years he worked closely with colleagues in the Women and Children’s Health Policy Center in the Bloomberg School of Public Health on the Dyson Community Pediatrics Training Initiative National Evaluation, a longitudinal study assessing the impact of integrating community-based experiences and child advocacy skills into residency training. Dr. Solomon holds a joint appointment in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society in the Bloomberg School of Public Health where he conducts research with faculty in the Center for Injury Research & Policy to reduce and prevent childhood injury. He was Co-PI on the recently completed NICHD funded Safe Start study, a randomized trial to evaluate the impact of a safe sleep intervention on mothers’ knowledge, beliefs, intentions, skills and practices related to creating and maintaining a safe sleep environment for their infants.
For 14 years, Dr. Solomon served as medical director for the Harriet Lane Clinic (HLC), a large academic-based pediatric primary care clinic serving children and families in East Baltimore. Many of the clinic’s patients and families experience significant social and financial challenges associated with living in poverty. In collaboration with Hopkins and community partners, supported by philanthropic organizations, Dr. Solomon has brought an array of wrap-around services to the HLC. Programming includes an on-site safety resource center, mental health services for children and adolescents, a maternal mental health clinic, parenting groups, and a help desk to connect families with community resources (Hopkins Community Connections, formerly Health Leads©).
Dr. Solomon is also an active clinical teacher and research mentor to medical students, residents, fellows and junior faculty interested in addressing the social determinants of health. He previously served as a Taussig College Faculty Co-Leader in the Colleges Advisory Program in the School of Medicine and Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Residency Program. His academic career and personal mission has been centered on providing high quality family-centered primary care, while training new generations of child health professionals to become advocates for vulnerable populations.
