Dr. Anne Le studied at the Paris Descartes University, Cochin Port-Royal School of Medicine, in France where she obtained a Habilitation degree, the highest academic qualification a scholar can achieve in Europe. After her clinical training at Henri Poincaré University Hospital, Nancy, in France, Dr. Le started her post-doctoral research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2007. Since 2011, Dr. Le has been an independent investigator who has yielded a number of contributions to the field of cancer metabolism research demonstrated by her publication record as a pioneer in the field. 

She has published in the best journals, such as Cell Metabolism and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. Research media, such as Science Daily, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Business Insider, ALN® Magazine, among many others, have written about her work. Dr. Le is highly respected and sought after for her strong proficiency in judging the work and ideas of her peers. She is regularly invited to serve on review panels by prestigious organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Defense. She is frequently asked by highly-cited scientific journals to review manuscripts submitted to their journals. more

Research Summary

The studies in Dr. Anne Le's laboratory primarily focus on cancer metabolism and metabolic aspects of other diseases. Using metabolomics technologies, their studies have led to breakthrough discoveries revealing several characteristic features of the metabolism of cancer (PMID: 22225880).  One of these, the dependence of cancer cells on glutamine metabolism, has translated into clinical trials as a novel therapy for cancer patients. They further tracked the metabolic pathways in the remaining tumor after this novel therapy and identified the best-suited drugs for combined synergistic therapy (PMID: 27559084). Recently, they uncovered a specific role of the neurotransmitter N-Acetyl-Aspartyl-Glutamate (NAAG) for the first time in cancer, suggesting the possible use of NAAG for tumor monitoring. Moreover, NAAG was identified as a glutamate reservoir in cancer (PMID: 30970252).

The Le laboratory consists of a diverse group of researchers led by Dr. Anne Le who is responsible for leading and directing projects. Every member of the lab is passionate about creating innovative solutions for improving the lives of cancer patients. The research conducted in Le lab exploits the altered cellular metabolism found in many cancers for prognostic and therapeutic potential.

The Le laboratory also provides metabolomics assessments to scientists and physicians, nationally and internationally.

  • Provides consultation to basic, clinical, and translational research teams regarding the feasibility, design, and costs of projects using metabolomics technologies (including mass spec and NMR-based metabolomics);
  • Provides metabolomics approaches based on specific research projects/questions: ranging from simple assays or targeted metabolomics to high-throughput approaches such as global metabolic profiling and stable isotope-13C, 15N-labeled on a wide variety of sample types;
  • Provides extensive data analysis and suggests options for subsequent steps towards clinical implementation.
