Dr. Sunjay Berdia is an orthopaedic surgeon affiliated with Sibley Memorial Hospital, Suburban Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, as well as an adjunct assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Berdia is certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as hand surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He practices out of The Orthopaedic Center in Washington, D.C. and Rockville, Md.

Dr. Berdia has an expertise in hand, microvascular and upper extremity surgery. 

Dr. Berdia earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Yale School of Medicine, followed by a hand and upper extremity fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University. During this time, he also studied at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and received specialized training in treating congenital hand and upper extremity deformities. 

Dr. Berdia had a brief career in the computer industry before entering medicine, which allowed him to develop artificial intelligence software while he was in medical school. The software automatically determined polyethylene wear of total hip arthroplasties using digitized radiographs. Dr. Berdia received a patent on his algorithm and was one of the few winners of the University of Chicago Student Summer Research Poster Forum Award. He was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, distinguishing the top 10% of medical students in the country.

Dr. Berdia is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Medical Association and the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Society for Surgery of the Hand. 

Dr. Berdia has been named a Top Doctor in the Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Washington-Baltimore areas by Castle Connolly. 

Dr. Berdia has been involved with multiple research projects, published peer-review articles and presented worldwide. He was previously the principal investigator for the Orthopaedic Research and Educational Foundation Resident Research Award. Dr. Berdia’s research interests include kinematic analysis of wrist motion, wrist instability, carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome, and distal radius fractures. more
