Dr. Anthony J. Caputy is a neurosurgeon at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Dr. Caputy is board certified in neurosurgery and practices out of GWUMFA Department of Neurosurgery, located in Washington D.C. He is also a co-director of the Neurologic Institute, as well as the chairman of the department of neurosurgery and the first Hugo V. Rizzoli professor of the department at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Caputy also serves as the director of medical education and the program director for George Washington University Medical Center’s neurosurgical residency. He is affiliated with Sibley Memorial Hospital, George Washington University Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital and Reston Hospital Center. 

Dr. Caputy has an expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery. He has various clinical interests, including the instrumentation and reconstruction of complex spine surgery, epilepsy surgery, surgery for acoustic neuromas, Chiari malformations, surgery for spinal tumors, carotid endarterectomies and other vascular neurosurgery.

Dr. Caputy earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed an internship in general surgery at the University of North Carolina and a residency in neurosurgery at Georgetown University Hospital. After his residency, Dr. Caputy joined Georgetown’s faculty and established the neurological intensive care unit, of which he was the unit’s first medical director. Dr. Caputy also completed a fellowship at the University of Maryland Hospital Shock Trauma Center. 

Dr. Caputy is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, as well as a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the Washington Academy of Neurological Surgeons, the Epilepsy Foundation of the National Capital Area and the Neurosurgical Society of Virginia, of which he was president from 2000 to 2002. Dr. Caputy has been named a Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine, Consumers’ Checkbook Magazine, U.S. News & World Report and Castle Connolly, which has recognized him regularly over the years. 

Dr. Caputy has lectured on endoscopic spinal surgery using minimally invasive techniques, as well as epilepsy surgery. He has also published papers, abstracts and book chapters, as well as authoring a textbook, ‘Operative Neurosurgical Anatomy.’ more
