Meet Eliana M. Perrin, M.D., M.P.H.

Eliana Perrin is a nationally-recognized leader in patient-oriented primary care, childhood obesity, and health disparities research. Dr. Perrin has developed, tested, and disseminated many tools to help pediatricians prevent and treat obesity. Her ground-breaking work has a broad impact on an epidemic that affects one in three children in the United States.

Dr. Perrin joined Johns Hopkins University as a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Primary Care in 2021 from Duke University. Through her appointment in the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing Medicine, and School of Public Health, her focus is elevating primary care at Johns Hopkins and ensuring the complexity and importance of primary care are at the center of Johns Hopkins’ mission and work through innovation, sophistication, collaboration, and ambition.

Leveraging JHU’s existing primary care assets to cross fertilize toward the best education, scholarship, clinical best practices, and policy.

Fostering dissemination of knowledge, training the best primary care practitioners, making sure the evidence toward best practice comes from - and returns to - practice, and creating policy that values community, primary care, and allows for best population health.

Creating synergies among the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Carey School of Business, Homewood Campus, and Johns Hopkins Community Physicians to enhance primary care research, best practices, advocacy and access, and education.

R.A.C.E. Consortium Collaboration Aims

Research

Be on the forefront of primary care research through collaboration, rigor, and inclusion of patients, providers, and communities in research efforts. Rigorously study important problems (obesity, mental health, health disparities and health equity). Lean into the investigation of primary care modalities and promises (vaccination, care coordination, behavioral change, telehealth). Learn from every patient encounter.

Advocacy and Access

Focus on population health through impactful policy and advocacy, facilitating partnerships in the community and state, and leveraging technology and other resources to expand access to care. Coalesce and coordinate efforts throughout campus to engage in efforts that promote primary care and its ability to equitably serve the community.

Clinical Care

Promote best practices in primary care by fostering primary care teams, improving performance measures, promoting the voices of patients and their families, and bridging research, education,  and practice. Think through how JHU and its partners can realize the aspirations set forth in the National Academies “Implementing High-quality Primary Care”.

Education

Reduce bias against primary care and enhance education, emphasize preventative care, create a learning across the primary care pipeline approach, provide opportunities for those under-represented in primary care. Capitalize on a generational interest in social justice and social determinants of health.
