Diversity Resources

Improving diversity at Johns Hopkins allows us to better reflect the community we serve. While racial and ethnic minorities make up 26 percent of the total U.S. population, only about six percent of practicing physicians and nine percent of nurses are Latino, African American or Native American.

In Baltimore, where 65 percent of the population is African American and where the Latino population has increased by nearly 50 percent in the last six years, there is a similar disconnect between providers and patients. The Office of Diversity and Cultural Competence supports initiatives in departments across all levels of the organization, from executive administration to students. These include:

Cell Biology

Dr. Doug Robinson, Professor and Founding Director of the Summer Academic Research Experience (SARE) runs a successful pipeline program which seeks to develop exceptional high school students from the greater Baltimore area (SARE Scholars) by introducing them to academic research with a secondary emphasis on STEM and health-related professions.


Hosted their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Visiting Professor program, with Brigadier General Dr. Norvell Vandervall (Van) Coots, who serves as the Commander of the U.S. Army Europe Regional Medical Command and Command Surgeon of U.S. Army Europe. Previously, he served as the Deputy Commanding General for Support for the Army Medical command and as the Assistant Surgeon General for Force Projection, Office of the Army Surgeon General, at the Pentagon.

Dr. Ginette Okoye heads the Ethnic Skin Program to meet the skin health needs of Baltimore's ethnically diverse community. It provides specialized diagnosis and treatment of skin problems for individuals from ethnic backgrounds, and screens persons with ethnic skin for skin cancer. Community outreach and education are priorities. Through a variety of activities, the Ethnic Skin Program informs the public about diseases that disproportionately affect people with pigmented skin.

Gynecology & Obstetrics

Currently is in the process of developing the Johns Hopkins Women’s Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development Program with an overall objective to mentor junior faculty who are obstetrician/gynecologists, in their transition into productive, physician scientists in areas related to women’s health research. The WRHR’s search and selection committee is committed to inclusion and diversity principles in its efforts to identify scholars.


The Diversity Council, chaired by Dr. Deidra Crews, is in preparation of their 12th Annual Myron L. Weisfeldt Distinguished Visiting Professor in Diversity program (scheduled for May, 2015). Each year a preeminent scholar is invited to spend approximately three days interacting with residents, faculty and leadership, with a dinner held in their honor. Previous speakers have included such highly regarded physician-scientists:

Dr. Adaora Adimora (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, where she is an expert on HIV epidemiology.

Dr. Alicia Fernandez (University of California, San Francisco), Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and a practicing general internist at San Francisco General Hospital, where she is an expert on Latino and immigrant health.

Dr. Keith C. Norris (University of California, Los Angeles), Professor of Medicine and Executive Vice President for Research and Health Affairs at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, and holds a dual appointment at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; a practicing nephrologist with expertise in Latino and African-American populations.

Dr. Hannah Valantine (National Institutes of Health), Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity, formerly Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Leadership at Stanford School of Medicine, and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center; a cardiologist who is nationally recognized for her transformative approaches to diversity in medicine.


Under the directorship of Dr. Justin McArthur, strategies have been implemented to increase diversity among its residents and faculty in the Department of Neurology. Dr. Amanda Brown, is the director of the Johns Hopkins Internship in Brain Sciences (JHIBS) program, which is a competitive, 8-week summer program for Baltimore City School students targeting underrepresented juniors and seniors. Both Drs. Charlene Gamaldo and Rachel Salas serve as JHIBS mentors and were recently honored by the American Academy of Neurology for their efforts with developing the Osler Apprenticeship in Neurology Program.


Dr. Sandra Lin, Director of Diversity and Inclusion Efforts leads the departmental diversity committee which is engaged with various efforts, including programs targeted to women and underrepresented minority students. The "Women in Otolaryngology" mentorship program meets regularly to include women faculty, fellows, and residents.  A clerkship for visiting URM students interested in the specialty of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery was also established.

Dr. Juan C. Troncoso leads the Pathology Diversity Committee, which works to foster a diverse, inclusive, engaging, and supportive social, intellectual learning environment that is open to diverse beliefs, values and perspectives among staff, faculty and students by offering programs, hosting speakers, disseminating information, and engaging in discussions on diversity.


The Pediatric Diversity Council was developed with the primary goal to continuously increase and maintain activities within the Department of Pediatrics that both enhance shared and diverse experiences and exposures and foster cultural competency for all trainees while also developing effective strategies to recruit house staff that will enrich the residency program through diversity. Activities include hosting dinners for second visit URM residency program applicants, a monthly Cultural Competency Luncheon for Pediatric Clinical Fellows. These efforts are spearheaded by Drs. Estelle Gauda and Janet Serwint.

As part of ongoing efforts to train future physicians, Dr. Maria Trent (Pediatrics) provides trainees the opportunity to practice their skills in cultural competency. Targeting graduate level trainees completing the adolescent medicine clerkship (student), required or elective clinical rotation (pediatrics, med-peds, and internal-medicine residents), and pediatric fellows within the Children's Center, Dr. Trent offers a series of simulation exercises using standardized patients to allow students, residents, fellows, and staff to experience cultural communication scenarios and receive feedback for ongoing improvement as a part of clinical training and leadership development.

Psychiatry & Behavioral Science

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry offer a weekly conference for Child Psychiatry residents and Child Psychology post-doc fellows and faculty to further develop their skills in cultural sensitivity and other matters related to diversity (e.g., language, nationality) specifically related to providing exceptional care. Drs. Carisa Perry-Parrish, Roma Vasa, Marco Grados are instrumental in this effort and other activities.

Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences

Drs. Richard Zellars and Fred Bunz are co-leads of a competitive 7-week summer program, The Cancer in the Under-Privileged, Indigent, or Disadvantaged (CUPID) program, which is designed to promote careers in oncology to promising medical students at an early career stage of their career. The objective of this program is to instill a lasting sense of excitement about oncology among early-career medical students and to encourage them to consider postgraduate training in an oncological specialty.


Co-Chairs, Dr. Arman Rahmim and Ms. Joann Barry oversee the Radiology Diversity Committee, which hosts a film series during Black History Month, bi-monthly multicultural festivals, and other cultural events to raise diversity awareness and embrace the diversity of their trainees, staff, and faculty. Other activities also include:

- Participating in trainees’ interviews to emphasize their interest in recruiting competitive applicants who are from underrepresented minorities.

- Partnering with international exchange programs to provide opportunities with trainees and faculty to increase greater interaction between different cultures from various institutions, such as the University of Puerto Rico and the Ministry of Health of Trinidad and Tobago.

- Supporting the Career Development Advisory Committee of the Department of Radiology which meets with members of the department of various ethnic groups to ensure retention of faculty that represent their cultural richness.

- Reviewing the leave and salary policies within the department to ensure that no biases are present, particularly those that may affect minority groups.


The Brady Urological Diversity Committee was created with Dr. Arthur Burnett, Patrick C. Walsh Distinguished Professor of Urology and Leslie Mangold, Clinical Research Administrator and Residency Coordinator, serving as inaugural co-chairs. This collaborative committee is comprised of faculty, staff and residents working together to create an inclusive environment within the Department of Urology in relation to multiple aspects of diversity.

Bayview Medical Center Diversity Council - An important part in the Johns Hopkins Bayview mission to advance medicine involves recognizing the importance of being inclusive and respectful of the personal experiences and patient backgrounds.
