Henry Brem, Michael Johns Honored by Castle Connolly

Johns Hopkins Medicine congratulates Michael Johns, former dean of the medical faculty and former vice president for medicine of The Johns Hopkins University, who has been selected to receive a 2015 National Physician of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award from Castle Connolly for his work, including leading Emory University’s Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center. In addition, Henry Brem, professor and director of the Department of Neurosurgery, was selected to receive a National Physician of the Year Award for Clinical Excellence from Castle Connolly. 

About Henry Brem

Dr. Henry Brem

Receiving the 2015 Castle Connolly National Physician of the Year Award for Clinical Excellence, Henry Brem is the Harvey Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery and serves as neurosurgeon-in-chief; professor of oncology, ophthalmology and biomedical engineering; and director of the Hunterian Neurological Research Laboratory.

Brem has developed new tools and techniques that have changed the field of neurosurgery. Brem carried out the pivotal clinical study that introduced navigational imaging into the neurosurgical suite. His work led to the FDA's approval of the first image guidance computer system for intraoperative localization of tumors. Furthermore, he has changed the surgical armamentarium against brain tumors by inventing and developing Gliadel® wafers to intraoperatively deliver chemotherapy to brain tumors. His work has shown that surgeons can accurately deliver potent therapies directly at the tumor site.

Under Brem’s guidance, U.S. News & World Report ranked Johns Hopkins’ neurosurgery department first in the nation for four consecutive years beginning in 2010. Read the full press release about his achievements.

Dr. Henry Brem was honored for Clinical Excellence at the 2015 National Physician of the Year Awards. The event was held at The Pierre Hotel on March 23, 2015 celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the inauguration of the award by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.

About Michael Johns

Johns came to Johns Hopkins in 1984 as the chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. He served as the former dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and vice president of the medical faculty at Johns Hopkins University until 1991, when he left for his current position at Emory University. Johns is receiving a 2015 Castle Connolly National Physician of the Year Award for Lifetime Achievement.

During his years at Johns Hopkins, he developed the largest academic department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery in the country, created the Center for Hearing Sciences and was responsible for planning and developing the new Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center.

Johns achieved international reputation as a cancer surgeon and became a leading spokesman on the reform of the nation’s health care system. Read more about Johns’ contributions.
