Building on Our Strengths
Date: April 23, 2015
Mark Anderson, Director, Department of Medicine
As I settle into my new role as director, I find it hard to believe that almost nine months have passed. During this time, I’ve met with many faculty and staff in various divisions and can confidently report that our department is thriving. We had several exciting events this past winter that allowed us to highlight our strengths across each of our three missions.
The remodeled medical units in the Nelson/Harvey Building continue to be a source of pride for our providers, patients and families. We also celebrated the opening of a new clinic to deliver novel treatment to our viral hepatitis patients. Our infectious disease division has been at the forefront in
moving these new drugs with relatively few side effects forward to market. It’s truly an example of our research having a positive impact on the health of our community.
On the educational front, the residency programs at East Baltimore and at Bayview completed a successful recruitment season; we’re thrilled with the next class of interns joining us in July. We had equal success in our fellowship match this fall, so I’m happy to report that our pipeline of trainees is strong.
And the department’s annual research day, held on March 10, proved memorable. The speakers delivered exciting science, and we had so many posters by our trainees, staff and faculty that we had to create an overflow area.
In addition, scientists in our hematology, cardiology and pulmonary medicine divisions hosted Dr. Gary Gibbons, director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. They gave him an overview of our science, and provided perspectives on where this area of discovery is headed and how we can work with NIH to stay at the forefront of innovation.
I want to thank everyone for their continued support, and I look forward to seeing what the next several months will bring.
