Julie Freischlag (professor and director of the Department of Surgery, 2003-2013) has been named the UC Davis vice chancellor for human health sciences and dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. When Freischlag joined Johns Hopkins a decade ago as surgeon-in-chief, she became the first woman to hold the position. As vice chancellor at UC Davis, she will oversee the UC Davis Health System, an integrated organization that includes the UC Davis Medical Center, the UC Davis School of Medicine and Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, and the physician practice group known as UC Davis Medical Group. She also will serve in a dual role as dean of the School of Medicine. The health system has an annual budget exceeding $1.4 billion and more than 12,000 faculty, staff, and students. Freischlag came to Johns Hopkins from the University of California in Los Angeles, where she was chief of the Vascular Surgery Division and director of the Gonda (Goldschmied) Vascular Center. She completed her surgical residency and post-residency vascular fellowship at UCLA.
J. Brooks Jackson (professor and director of the Department of Pathology, 2000-2014) has been appointed dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for health sciences at the University of Minnesota, where he began his academic career as a pathology resident and assistant professor. A clinical pathologist who joined the Hopkins faculty in 1996, Jackson revolutionized HIV prevention efforts in developing countries. Under his leadership, the Department of Pathology at Hopkins achieved and maintained a first-place ranking in NIH funding, raised significant philanthropic support, and improved faculty diversity.
