Jean Anderson, professor and director of Gynecological Specialties, has received the 2013 Constance Wofsy Women’s Health Investigator Award from the Division of AIDS of the National Institutes of Health. The accolade recognizes Anderson’s pioneering work in treating women with HIV.
James Black III, associate professor of surgery, has been appointed the new chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy. Black has been instrumental in building the endovascular therapy program and recently received national attention for repairing extensive aortic aneurysms using fenestrated aortic endovascular devices.
Zaver Bhujwalla, professor of radiology and director of the Johns Hopkins In-Vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Center, has been named a fellow of the World Molecular Imaging Society after having served as its president for 2012–13.
George Bigelow, professor and director of the Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Maxine Stitzer, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, have received the 2013 Award for Scientific Translation from the Society for the Advancement of Behavioral Analysis.
Henry Brem, professor and director of the Department of Neurosurgery, has received the first Abhijit Guha Award from the Society for Neuro-Oncology and the Section on Tumors of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons. This new award honors Brem’s exceptional research and active role as a mentor to the next generation of neuro-oncology professionals.
Neil Bressler, professor of ophthalmology and chief of the Retina Division at the Wilmer Eye Institute, has been appointed the ninth editor of JAMA Ophthalmology, formerly known as the Archives of Ophthalmology, an internationally known, influential peer-reviewed monthly periodical.
Michael Caterina, professor of neurosurgery, biological chemistry and neuroscience, has been appointed the inaugural director of the Neurosurgery Pain and Research Institute.
Aravinda Chakravarti, professor of medicine, pediatrics, and molecular biology and genetics, has been named the 2013 recipient of the American Society of Human Genetics’ top honor, the William Allan Award, in recognition of his many contributions to the field of human genetics.
Donald Coffey, Distinguished Service Professor of urology, Carol Greider, professor and director of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Bert Vogelstein, professor of oncology and pathology, investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and director, Ludwig Center for Cancer Genetics & Therapeutics, are among the inaugural 100 fellows elected to the Academy of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Jonathan Efron, associate professor of surgery and urology and chief of the Ravitch Colorectal Service, has been named interim director of the Department of Surgery, succeeding Julie Freischlag, who has accepted the position of dean at UC Davis School of Medicine.
Jonathan Lewin, professor and director of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science and radiologist-in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital, has been appointed senior vice president of integrated healthcare delivery for Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Bruce Perler, professor and chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy and the Julius H. Jacobson, II Professor, has been named the Department of Surgery’s vice chair for clinical operations and financial affairs. Recently elected as the 2013–14 vice president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, Perler will maintain an active vascular surgery practice and continue as director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s vascular noninvasive laboratory.
He also is senior editor of the Journal of Vascular Surgery.
Antony Rosen, professor of medicine and pathology and chief of the Division of Rheumatology, has been named the new vice dean for research, overseeing Hopkins Medicine’s multimillion-dollar biomedical research enterprise. He succeeds Landon King, executive vice dean, professor of medicine and of biological chemistry, as well as head of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Andrew Satin, has become the new director and Dorothy Edwards Professor of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, succeeding Harold Fox, who headed the department for 16 years.
