Another patient who has benefitted from Strong Start is 33-year-old Lisa Terry of Highlandtown. The program’s staff helped Terry manage her gestational diabetes by showing her how to keep a food diary, monitoring her blood sugar levels, and by offering regular meetings with a nutritionist. Patient advocate Catalina Humphrey even switched Terry’s blood testing to Johns Hopkins Bayview from a lab that required her to ride a bus and walk four blocks – a challenging trip with her 3-year-old son in tow.
After developing preeclampsia, a condition characterized by dangerously high blood pressure, Terry was induced to deliver 15 days before her due date. Her son, Damien Christopher, arrived on Jan. 10, weighing a sturdy 6 pounds and 7 ounces.
