Immunogenetics Lab Marks 50 Years

Date: December 5, 2014

For half a century, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Division of Immunogenetics and Transplantation Immunology has provided clinical histocompatibility testing and immunologic monitoring for solid organ and stem cell transplantation. The division’s goal is to study genetic factors controlling the immune response and the transmission of those factors across generations. Co-directed by Mary Leffell and Andrea Zachary, the Immunogenetics Laboratory—part of the Department of Medicine—comprises 40 researchers. The team developed a unique desensitization protocol used worldwide. “We customize our testing for each transplant patient based on their condition,” says Leffell. “That allows us to get the best possible information to physicians.” To watch a video about their work, visit bit.ly/JHimmunogeneticslab.
