Eleven students with developmental disabilities now spend part of their school day at All Children’s Hospital as environmental services, food services and rehabilitation services interns. The initiative is part of Project SEARCH, an internship program founded at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in partnership with its local department of education to support young adults with developmental disabilities. All Children’s is the first Project SEARCH site on the western coast of Florida. Students begin their day with an hourlong class at their school, spend up to five hours learning job skills at their internship at All Children’s, then return to the classroom to reflect on their day, discuss challenges and evaluate progress. Once students graduate from the program, they are better equipped to find a job locally using skills learned at All Children’s.
