The next time you visit the Alpha Commons building on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus, check out a new work of art in the lobby. Pictured above, “4BayviewHopkinsBaltimore” is an encaustic—a hot wax-sculpted painting—and mixed-media collage on birch hardwood. Designed by local artist Sandi Wilson, the montage celebrates the history of Hopkins Bayview over more than two centuries, incorporating artifacts from different eras. These elements include an admissions book page from 1818; a mid-19th century engraving of the original Bay View Almshouse, now known as the Mason F. Lord Building; and a photo that commemorates a 1959 desegregated nursing class at Baltimore City Hospitals, as Hopkins Bayview was formerly known. The commissioned artwork was donated by Richard Bennett, president of the medical center, and Andrew Frake, senior director of information services/voice communications.
