Amy Horne is Awarded 2014 Research Nurse Excellence Award

Amy Horne, RN, BSN, OCN was honored by The Friends of Oncology Nursing on May 6, 2014, as the recipient of 2014 Research Nurse Excellence Award. This group recognizes professional nurses and staff who exemplify excellence in the provision of comprehensive and compassionate care to individuals with cancer and their families.

Horne has been at Johns Hopkins for over ten years- initially as a treatment area nurse, as a research nurse, and more recently as the Lead Research Nurse in our Combined Breast and Gynecologic Cancer Program. In this new role, Amy has helped reorganize the clinical research infrastructure to increase the efficiency of the group.  She is truly an asset for patients and co-workers alike.

Media Highlights Dr. Sukumar’s Research

Dr. Sukumar and colleagues have developed a blood test that has the potential to both detect breast cancer spread and to inform the clinicians about the likelihood of a patient responding to prescribed treatment.  This test detects cancer DNA in the blood of patients with metastatic breast cancer.   Currently, patients wait until they are symptomatic before tests are ordered to determine cancer spread.  This new test could detect cancer spread or a recurrence much earlier before potentially improving outcomes. Initial results were published in April in the journal, Cancer Research and were highlighted in several media outlets including WebMD, the Baltimore Sun, and WMAR-TV.

Deborah Armstrong, M.D. has been promoted to Professor of Oncology, Gynecology and Obstetrics.  Armstrong was also appointed chairperson for the FDA Oncology Drugs Advisory Committee.
