April 2, 2009 - “Hopkins,” the seven-part ABC network news documentary filmed entirely at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and aired in late summer of 2008, is among the 2008 winners of the 68th Annual Peabody Awards for electronic media. Winners, chosen by the Peabody board, were named in a ceremony on April 1 by The University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The oldest prize in broadcasting, the Peabody Award is considered among the most prestigious and selective prizes in electronic media.
“We offer our sincere congratulations to ABC and all those involved with this project, and we understand how coveted an award the Peabody is among those doing serious journalism,” said a joint statement from Edward D. Miller, M.D., dean/CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Ronald R. Peterson, president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System. “We couldn’t be more proud to have participated.”
More than the earlier, award-winning Hopkins: 24/7 documentary that aired in 2000, the new Hopkins series focused on young physicians still in training and how they struggle to keep some balance between their personal and professional lives.
The 2008 series also portrayed the work of nurses and featured many patients, who agreed to share remarkably private moments. The series followed the lives of 29 medical professionals, including three medical students, 10 residents, 14 faculty physicians and two nurses.
The award ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
