The Johns Hopkins Hospital Ranked #3 in the Nation, #1 in Maryland

Dear Colleagues,

Every day, our physicians, nurses, other care providers, staff and faculty members deliver expert, compassionate care to every patient who comes to us. We are excited to share that, thanks to your enduring commitment to our patients’ health and well-being, The Johns Hopkins Hospital is once again ranked #3 in the nation on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals 2019–20 Honor Roll. Nationally, three of our medical specialties are ranked #1, 10 are in the top five, and 12 are in the top 10. In addition, we are proud to repeat as the only hospital on the list that is top-ranked for patients of all ages, as Johns Hopkins Children’s Center also made the Honor Roll again this year.

These annual rankings, which assess the performance of more than 4,600 hospitals in the United States, are often used by consumers to determine the best hospital to treat patients with serious illnesses and complex medical conditions. Because of your dedication and commitment, we continue to excel in delivering this kind of innovative care.

U.S. News also ranks hospitals in 16 medical specialties. Ten of those specialties at The Johns Hopkins Hospital are in the top five and 12 are in the top 10. The following specialty areas were ranked nationally:

#1 Geriatrics

#1 Neurology & Neurosurgery

#1 Rheumatology

#2 Nephrology

#2 Urology

#3 Gastroenterology & GI Surgery

#3 Ophthalmology

#3 Psychiatry

#4 Cancer

#5 Diabetes & Endocrinology

#7 Gynecology

#9 Pulmonology & Lung Surgery

#12 Cardiology & Heart Surgery

#13 Ear, Nose & Throat

#22 Orthopedics

We are immensely grateful for all of your hard work throughout the health system. In the Baltimore Metro and Maryland regions, The Johns Hopkins Hospital ranked #1 in 15 specialties. Congratulations also to Sibley Memorial Hospital, which achieved a #8 ranking for the Washington, D.C., region, and Suburban Hospital, whose ranking is #10 in Maryland and #10 in the Washington, D.C., region. We are also pleased that all our hospitals that provide adult care, including Howard County General Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, were designated as “high performing” in at least one of their specialties.

This year, U.S. News modified its ranking methodology. For the 2019–20 rankings, in addition to evaluating hospital processes, structure and resources dedicated to delivering patient care, U.S. News considered safety and quality data related to patient experience, mortality and hospital discharges to the patient’s home rather than to a step-down medical facility.

You can learn more about the rankings on the Johns Hopkins Medicine intranet site at insidehopkinsmedicine.org/usnews/. For a complete list of the 2019–20 Best Hospitals, visit the U.S. News & World Report website at health.usnews. com/best-hospitals.

Thank you again for all you do for our patients. You make Johns Hopkins the special place that it is.

Sincerely,
