Four Employees Share Ways They Compassionately Care

Rankings such as those conducted by U.S. News are often used by potential patients when they are making decisions about where to seek care. But day in and day out, it’s our people who make The Johns Hopkins Hospital one of the best in the nation and the world. Whether you are a member of the medical staff, a nurse or one of our deeply devoted staff members, it is because of you that our patients and their loved ones consistently receive the pinnacle of compassionate care. To the right, four of our employees share some of the many ways that they touch patients’ lives each day.

Melvin Johnson

Environmental Services

Associate

In environmental services, we contribute to compassionate quality care by making sure every area in the hospital is a clean, safe place. And if we see a family looking lost, we try to help them find where they’re going. I get joy at work by building relationships with the people around me. It makes me joyful when patients ask for me by name or send messages to my co-workers asking them to tell me to come back and visit them.

Meghan Rowcliffe

Pediatric Medication Safety Officer

Pediatric patients are some of our most vulnerable patient populations, and it is my job to understand the complexities of the medication-use process and the many ways in which a medication error can occur. In collaboration with medical staff, nurses, pharmacists and other ancillary services, we identify the root cause of an error and design strategies to mitigate and ideally prevent future medication errors from reaching our pediatric patients. The opportunity to partner with multiple disciplines and influence the safety and outcomes for pediatric patients brings me joy every day!

Theresa Briscoe

Information Receptionist

We welcome our visitors with a smile and stay aware of what is going on around us in case someone needs assistance. It’s a unique experience every day, and I just love serving our clients, patients and guests.

Kathrine Rempe

Clinical Customer Service Coordinator

I proactively round on all our patients and their families to make sure their needs are being met and their questions are being answered. I build relationships with patients and their families, listen to their concerns and help fix any issues. No one wants to be in the hospital, so if I am able to help make their stay better by being there for them, that is a great feeling. I truly love coming to work each day and working with the great team on the progressive cardiac care unit. It makes me happy to work with such caring and compassionate individuals.
