Director's Column

As we approach the end of the year, we want to show appreciation for many people in our lives, and I want to say thanks to each and every one of you. Because of you, the Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery continues to push the boundaries of medical education, research and patient care.

In this newsletter, you can read about the many ways your generous contributions have made a difference in the lives of people dealing with cancer. Lillie Shockney, M.A.S., administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, is featured here. She has brought many new initiatives to life, and will retire after nearly 35 years of service to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

You can read the inspiring story of grateful patient Phyllis Mindell, who has been cancer-free for three years. Mindell established gift funds for the surgeons and radiologist who treated her at The Johns Hopkins Hospital because she wanted “to ensure that Johns Hopkins Medicine flourishes and continues its research, education and clinical service.”

Last but not least, there's an additional article about another grateful patient: Emily McCarthy, who received care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital when her local hospital was unable to help. McCarthy designated the funds raised by a service organization she is affiliated with to go toward research at Johns Hopkins on liver and pancreatic diseases.

From all of your friends in the Department of Surgery, thank you. May you and yours enjoy a very happy and healthy 2019.
