Our Research Areas

The Brain Tumor Genetics Lab explores genetic components of a variety of primary central nervous system neoplasms and their impact on patient outcomes. We are interested in using our knowledge of genetic changes to better diagnose and treat these diseases.

Our lab is currently studying ways to personalize brain tumor treatments and identify factors that affect responses to therapy. We accomplish this by evaluating our current results and outcomes in the operating room and clinic, and also by discovering the underlying mechanisms of brain and spinal cord tumors and how those can be targeted with new therapeutic agents.

Areas of Investigation

Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Genetics

We use advanced genetic techniques to understand the genetic alterations that lead to the formation of central nervous system (CNS) tumors.

CNS Tumor Outcomes and Quality of Care

We analyze the outcomes and benefits of different therapies for patients with CNS tumors to inform our treatment approaches and improve our healthcare system.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Surgical Strategies

We conduct clinical studies to evaluate neurosurgical procedures for trigeminal neuralgia, looking at why some patients get the desired pain relief and others do not. This will help us develop more personalized treatments.

Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Biomarkers

We are working to discover new biomarkers that further our understanding of tumor biology. We look to understand how specific molecular markers impact response to therapies and patient outcomes, with the hope of isolating new molecular targets for brain and spinal cord tumors treatments.

Neuronal Injury Biomarkers

Leveraging our experience with cancer biomarkers, we are working to identify molecular biomarkers for patients with known or suspected neuronal injury.

Neurotrauma Outcomes

We are conducting clinical studies to evaluate the standard of care and improve outcomes for patients with traumatic brain or spine injuries, using institutional and national databases.
