Prerequisites for Acceptance

Several pathways are available before beginning pediatric neurology training at Johns Hopkins. Candidates may complete:

• two or three years of residency in an accredited pediatric program
• one post-graduate year in pediatrics and one year in internal medicine

Our program is not formally integrated with the Johns Hopkins pediatric residency program. Therefore, you must apply separately through ERAS for the program if you wish to pursue your preliminary training at Johns Hopkins. 

Pediatric neurology residents start as PGY-3. All four resident positions are categorical, with the first two years of training to be completed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. 

Application Process

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applicants must apply to both the Pediatric Neurology Program and Pediatrics. If selected to interview with Pediatric Neurology you will also interview with Pediatrics.

• September 7, 2023: Applications open for PGY 3 beginning July 2026
• September 28, 2023: Applications review begins
• October 10, 2023 (approx):  Offers for interviews extended
• November – December: Interviews

When applying through ERAS, select The Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurology Categorical Track (NRMP #1242185C0). You will also need to apply to The Johns Hopkins Pediatrics track (NRMP #1242320C0). Pediatric faculty is very involved in our selection process, and this allows them to review your application. A separate interview with Pediatrics is required and is the day after the Pediatric Neurology interview.

Interviews

Interviews will be conducted virtually via Thalamus and Zoom. Our Residency Selection Committee will start contacting prospective candidates regarding interviews by late October - early November. Please check your email on file with ERAS daily for messages regarding interviews. Once our interview slots are filled, the committee will keep a handful of applications on a waitlist.

Interview Dates: 

Interviews with pediatric neurology faculty will be conducted on Thursdays. Pediatrics interviews are on Fridays and will be arranged by our program administrator, Katie Eckert.

Information for International Medical Graduates

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (SOM) sponsors international residents and fellows for J-1 ECFMG alien physician exchange visitor status. This applies to residents and fellows joining the SOM from abroad, as well as those individuals in the U.S. in another nonimmigrant status.

The SOM sponsors H-1B temporary worker status in limited circumstances, specifically:

• Residents who have earned their Medical Degree [M.D.] in the U.S. and are currently in an ACGME-accredited clinical training program on Optional Practical Training
  OR
• Residents who are currently completing their ACGME-accredited residency in the U.S. on an H-1B *and* where there is sufficient H-1B time remaining for the offered residency or fellowship.
  OR
• Fellows who are currently completing their ACGME-accredited fellowship in the U.S. on an H-1B *and* where there is sufficient H-1B time remaining for the offered residency or fellowship.

There are no specific requirements for foreign medical graduates. Every application is considered on an individual basis. However, all IMGs must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Is clinical experience in the United States required? 

As dictated by the ACGME, residents must have successfully completed two (2) years of ACGME-accredited education in pediatrics or one (1) year of ACGME-accredited education in pediatrics and one (1) year of ACGME-accredited education in family medicine or internal medicine.
