Senior Fellows

Birthplace: Loma Linda, CA
Med school: Johns Hopkins
Residency: Johns Hopkins. Interested in clinical work, teaching, and epidemiology research.  
Will be pursuing a masters in epidemiology through the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health starting in the Fall 2017.  Has done research in obesity and PAD through the PACE database.  
Hobbies: reading, traveling, fishing, the outdoors.

dr tessa novickTessa Novick, MD
Birthplace: Washington, DC
Med School: UT Southwestern
Residency: JHU.  Worked with Deidra Crews and Michelle Estrella on some clinical research projects around APOL1 and illicit drug use, and also involved with EBM at JHU.  Interested in the underserved. 
Hobbies: Playing with her golden retriever, Indiana Jones; Alfred Hitchcock movies; exercise (spinning and hip-hop classes), learning to bake and play the cello.

Residency: Alleghany Health Network; Pittsburgh, PA.  During residency, has enjoyed teaching med students and interns, QI research, transplant work; interested in nephrology critical care as a career.

Med School: Siriraj Hospital, Thailand
Residency: Bassett Medical Center; Cooperstown, NY.  Worked with Jeanne Clark and Mariana Lazo on LOOK AHEAD and PREMIER, among other research projects; finished JHSPH MPH. Interested in epidemiology of obesity and albuminuria.
Hobbies: Jogging, playing soccer, and watching TED talks

Residency: Pinnacle Health; Harrisburg, PA.  Has enjoyed teaching, advocacy, international work, clinical cases. Was “Best Resident of the Year.” Rotated with us at JHH.
Hobbies: Volunteering, Community Service, Medical Missions, Community Activisim, Baking, Tennis, Cricket, Basketball, Violin, Painting, Traveling, Hiking, Scrapbooking, Teaching, Tutoring.  

First Year Fellows

Med School: PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, India
Residency: Cleveland Clinic, OH. After residency, received MS in Management from Case Western, and was a hospitalist at Cleveland Clinic, in addition to serving on several hospital committees. He is interested in QI and teaching.
Hobbies: tennis, bike riding, traveling, avid foodie. 

dr flor espinozaFlor Espinoza, MD Birthplace: Baton Rouge, LA
Med School: LSU
Residency: University of Texas Medical Branch; Galveston, TX.  During residency, pursued clinical research in transplantation outcomes. While obtaining her MPH, collaborated in health policy research around language access and health care accessibility. Interested in furthering public health efforts in CKD and other aspects of nephrology, both nationally and internationally.
Hobbies: zumba, salsa and merengue dancing, scuba diving, beach volleyball, running.

laila lakhaniLaila Lakhani, MBBS  
Birthplace: Karachi, Pakistan
Med School: Aga Khan University, Pakistan
Residency: University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, TX. During residency, Laila was in the Leadership in Medicine tract, completed Physician Education Certificate Program and presented at ASN on renal biopsy results in myeloma as well as renal complications of immune checkpoint inhibitors. She is interested in leadership through clinical care, research, and education.
Hobbies include: travelling, hiking/trekking, reading, teaching and cooking.

felipe naranjo sanchezFelipe Naranjo Sanchez, MD 
Birthplace: Ambato, Ecuador
Med School: Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Ecuador Facultad de Medicina
Residency: North Shore Medical Center Salem Hospital; MA. Prior to and during residency, served as research assistant at several Harvard-affiliated programs, including a project on biomarkers in AKI. Interested in homeostasis (kidney and life) both here and abroad. Hobbies:
playing soccer, watching sporting events, trying new food, reading biographies, spending time with family, politics, playing video games.

Med School: Ross University School of Medicine, Dominica
Residency & Chief Residency: Florida Atlantic University; Boca Raton, FL. Excelled in teaching, volunteering, mission work, including working with “Project Access” to reduce health disparities. Interested in creating a culture of excellence in his fellowship and career.
Hobbies: jiu jitsu, playing guitar

Birthplace: Quito, Ecuador
Med School: Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Ecuador Facultad de Medicina
Residency: University of New Mexico; Albuquerque, NM. Has enjoyed research but found his calling in teaching. Works with residents and students, and was accepted in the “Residents as Educators Program.”
Hobbies: music—composer, founder & director of La Rocka nonprofit recording studio; ice hockey (former national team member); short film maker.

Anshul Bhalla, MBBS

Residency: Tufts Medical Center; Board Certified in Internal Medicine
Nephrology Fellowship: Tufts Medical Center; Advanced Nephrology training included inpatient AKI management, initial and follow up kidney transplant, heart-kidney transplant evaluations; outpatient management of patients with CKD, glomerulonephritis, hypertension and peri-transplant care.
Hobbies: Regular practice of yoga and meditation, traveling, and cooking
