Viral Oncology

There is perhaps nothing more efficient than a virus at disrupting cellular pathways. In doing so, they provide a unique window into the cellular reprogramming that can sometimes lead to cancer.  While scientists have known of the association between cancer and viruses, such as the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human papilloma virus (HPV), hepatitis C, and Kaposi’s Sarcoma Herpes Virus (KSHV), they are now beginning to decipher the precise role they play in cancer initiation. Our Viral Oncology Program brings together basic scientist and clinical investigators to study viruses associated with cancer.  Hodgkin’s disease, cervical cancer, head and neck cancers, liver cancer, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, and AIDS-related malignancies are among the diseases known to be virus driven. Understanding the interaction between viruses and cells is the basis for developing preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies. The Program leaders are Diane Hayward, Ph.D., and Richard Roden, Ph.D.
