The Medical Oncology Track is ideal for fellows with a strong interest in an academic career in solid tumors and/or hematologic malignancies. After completing the first year of single-board training in Oncology, fellows can either choose to:

• Enter directly into 2 years of mentored academic research training or
• Extend their clinical training by an additional 6 months to receive dual certification in Hematology, followed by 18 months of research training

During the first year, Medical Oncology Track Fellows will rotate through the following clinical services:

Outpatient Solid Tumor Service (OPD)

This innovative outpatient clinical experience serves as the foundation for the development of a fellows mastery in the management of solid tumor patients. Fellows see new patients for both standard of care therapeutic approaches as well as clinical trial consideration with world-renowned disease-specific experts at first consultation. Fellow serve in the role of primary longitudinal oncologic provider for these patients in their weekly continuity clinic, with continued oversight by the faculty attending.

Medical Oncology Continuity Clinic

This weekly clinic during the first and second year provides fellows with longitudinal autonomy and targeted training in the outpatient management of solid tumors.  Fellows work with a multi-disciplinary care team that includes a longitudinal faculty attending, a continuity clinic attending and a primary outpatient nurse to facilitate optimal continued management.

Hematologic Malignancies Continuity Clinic

This block-based continuity clinic allows fellows to work weekly with our world-renowned faculty to gain longitudinal outpatient experience in varied hematologic malignancies including myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders, lymphomas and myelomas.

Inpatient Solid Tumor Service

This intensive inpatient service provides fellows with a unique training experience for the inpatient care and chemotherapeutic management of patients with solid malignancies.

Solid Tumor Inpatient Consult Service

This consult-only service allows fellows to direct inpatient work-up of patients with known or suspected solid tumors.

Leukemia Service

This inpatient acute leukemia service exposes fellows to standard and trial chemotherapeutic regimens for the treatment of newly diagnosed or relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and aggressive myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In addition, fellows will learn the essentials of bone marrow biopsy and intrathecal chemotherapy techniques.

Myeloma, Transplant & Lymphoma (MTL) Service

This bone marrow transplant (BMT) ward provides fellows with training on a wide spectrum of BMT techniques such as autologous, allogeneic, matched-unrelated, haploidentical, and T cell depleted.   Indications for BMT on this ward range from malignant diseases to genetic and autoimmune disorders.

Palliative Care

This rotation provides fellows with an introduction to palliative medicine, pain and symptom management, and end-of-life care.  Fellows will have direct clinical experience in an inpatient hospice setting and palliative care clinics.
