SunSibs Camp Staff

Counselor Sunday

Not only is SunSibs fun for the kids, it’s also fun for the adults. Being a SunSibs staff member is an amazing, and rewarding experience. As a member of the SunSibs staff, you will help build each camper's self-confidence, build and help maintain new friendships, and provide them with fun memories that they will remember forever. While you may switch between being disciplinary figure and friend, you will become a role model, pal, and big brother or big sister to the campers you meet. Through helping the kids, you may also learn something about yourself, and you may be surprised by your abilities! By working with many likeminded people, you will also make some of the best and strongest friendships of your life.

To ensure that the campers have the best experience possible, there are a variety of staff positions that are filled each year. Staff positions include Camp Director, Staff Director, Programming Director, CIT Director, counselor, activities staff, and a Nurse from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center's Division of Pediatric Oncology. All leadership staff, counselors, and activity staff are volunteers. They devote 100% of themselves to ensuring that each, and every child, has an experience they will remember forever. Not only does each staff member provide a full weekend of fun-filled adventures, they also provide an environment that is safe, comfortable, and medically supervised.

Past Directors

In 2019, SunSibs celebrated its 20th year by welcoming back all its past directors. These folks help lay the foundation for our camp and our family. They spoke to our campers and staff about what camp has meant to them and how it has impacted their lives. This was a truly awesome experience and celebration. Our camp family would like to thank them again for all of their dedication and love that has helped build our camp family into what it is today!

Counselor in Training (CIT) Program

SunSibs Staff

When campers that have attended SunSibs reach the age of 17 years old, they are eligible to apply for the Counselor in Training (CIT) program. The program focuses on helping former campers make the transition from camper to counselor a successful one, while developing leadership skills to progress into future staff members. This transition is facilitated through mentorship and guidance from the CIT Program Director, and other staff members that they work with during camp. CIT participants are exposed to the counselor position, and have the opportunity to observe other staff roles throughout the weekend.

Being in the CIT program requires you to be present for the entire weekend of camp (i.e. staff orientation on the Friday before campers arrive, and attend mandatory training in the spring). Throughout the weekend, CIT participants are evaluated multiple times by the CIT Program Director and staff members they are placed with. They are provided with daily evaluation benchmarks, as well as a final overall evaluation. These evaluations are designed to help CIT members improve during the weekend and determine their readiness to join the staff the next year. At the end of camp, if the CIT participant successfully passes the program, they will be asked back as a counselor by the Directors the following year. If the participant does not pass, the participant will be required to interview with the Staffing Director the following year if they choose to return. After the interview, the Staffing Director will decide if the CIT participant will be asked to return as a staff member for future camp engagements.

If you are eligible and would like to apply, please complete the application found below.
