Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Now Offered at Johns Hopkins Bayview
The Johns Hopkins Center for Bariatric Surgery offers adolescent bariatric surgery options and is accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) as a Comprehensive Center with Adult and Adolescent Qualifications.
The adolescent program focuses on the needs of patients 16 years old to young adult and is part of the only bariatric surgery center in Maryland accredited for adolescent care.
The multidisciplinary treatment team is led by Kimberley Steele, M.D., Ph.D., medical director and bariatric surgeon, and Ann Scheimann, M.D., M.B.A., pediatric medical advisor and pediatric gastroenterologist. Other specialists on the multidisciplinary team include dedicated dietitians, psychologists and nurse practitioners.
The team helps teens develop healthy lifestyle habits and prepares them for bariatric surgery, and also provides post-surgical weight management strategies. In addition, medical, nutritional, educational and behavioral support are offered for the adolescent patient and his or her parents/guardians.
