Harpal “Paul” S. Khanuja, M.D., with representatives from AAHKS

Harpal “Paul” S. Khanuja, M.D., chief, adult reconstruction, hip and knee replacement, Department of Orthopaedics, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and chief, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, received the inaugural Humanitarian Award from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) for his efforts as the co-founder and medical director of Operation Walk Maryland. Operation Walk Maryland is a private, not-for-profit volunteer medical service organization that provides free hip and knee replacement surgeries in developing countries and the United States. Operation Walk Maryland has changed the lives of more than 300 patients in countries including Ecuador, Peru, India and El Salvador.

The Humanitarian Award was established to recognize AAHKS members who have distinguished themselves through providing humanitarian medical services and programs with a significant focus on musculoskeletal diseases and trauma including the hip and knee in the United States or abroad.

Dr. Khanuja also has been instrumental in the way Johns Hopkins cares for hip and knee replacement patients. Under his leadership, the Hip and Knee Replacement Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview has established standardized protocols for patient care. Over the past year, there has been standardization in anesthesia and pain control, resulting in a decreased length of stay for patients—many of which are discharged within 24 hours of their surgery. There also has been a significant decrease in the number of patients who need a blood transfusion. Dr. Khanuja continues to work with the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality and the joint replacement clinical community to provide consistent care in joint replacement at all Johns Hopkins institutions.

Additionally, the Hip and Knee Replacement Program is one of four programs in the country that is a Center of Excellence for the Pacific Business Group on Health, which includes companies such as Lowes and Walmart. Employees throughout the east coast come to Johns Hopkins Bayview for their joint replacement surgeries.
