Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s Diversity Council Recognized in National Awards

March 18, 2011

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s Diversity Council was recently named one of the Top 25 diversity councils in the U.S. by the Association of Diversity Councils. The 2011 Diversity Council Honors Awards recognize groups that lead diversity processes in their organizations and demonstrate results in their workforce, workplace and marketplace.

“It is a wonderful honor for the JHBMC Diversity Council to be recognized as among the best in the U.S.—particularly in that many of those on the list with us are among the nation’s largest and most well-known companies,” says Richard Bennett, M.D., president of Johns Hopkins Bayview and co-chair of its Diversity Council. “Many of these corporations have international presence, and have been at the forefront of establishing structured diversity programs. In contrast, we serve largely a local community and only began our focused, broad-based work to celebrate diversity and foster inclusiveness four years ago.” Joining the Medical Center on the list of Top 25 diversity councils are American Airlines, Best Buy, Co., Inc., Comcast Corporation and Prudential Financial.

This award is the result of a lot of hard work by council members and the greater Hopkins Bayview community. The Diversity Council has recently overseen a number of successful efforts, including a Disabilities Awareness Expo to promote awareness and encourage recruiting of individuals with disabilities; a formal mentorship program to help increase diversity in key leadership positions; and a learning program, “Managing Diversity and Building an Inclusive Workplace,” designed specifically for Medical Center managers.

“The work of the JHBMC Diversity Council benefits the Medical Center in many ways,” says Anita Langford, vice president of Care Management Services at Johns Hopkins Bayview and co-chair of the Diversity Council. “It has an impact on employee recruitment, retention, engagement, productivity and talent development, as well as on patient safety and satisfaction. A culture of respect, civility and inclusion is essential in an environment where employees work in diverse teams.”

Johns Hopkins Bayview’s Diversity Council will be recognized at a special awards ceremony on April 5 in Atlanta, Ga.
